Mathematics
At Grange Primary School, we believe that all children can adopt a positive attitude and excitement when learning mathematical concepts. We endeavour to ensure that all children to have a “can do” attitude to Maths and have no fear when faced with a mathematical problem which requires the application of reasoning and problem-solving skills. The children develop persistence and patience with Maths and believe that there is no such thing as ‘getting Maths wrong’. All Marvellous Mistakes allow us to develop a deeper understanding into how problems can be viewed from a different mathematical angle or a different solution may be better suited to a problem. At Grange Primary School we foster a problem-solving mentality where the use of trial and error is encouraged.
We envisage that all children at Grange will excel in mathematical fluency and be able to achieve automaticity where they can quickly retrieve basic facts in relation to the four mathematical operations. Having such skills enable the children to focus more on understanding maths through the process of enquiry, reasoning and problem solving, and not be concerned with carrying out basic calculations. Excellent teaching, together with practical and exciting lessons, provide the children with the necessary tools to confidently explore and discuss their learning using mathematical language.
We broaden the children’s understanding and knowledge of how Maths is used in the wider world by making real life connections. Maths teaches children the skill of logic and order which can be applied to a variety of situations in real life. We encourage the children at Grange to appreciate and understand the importance of Maths in everyday life. Maths surrounds us constantly from tasks such as shopping with money to designing accurately measured buildings. We prepare the children to have the confidence and ability to apply their mathematical skills now and in the future.
Grange Primary School is a strong community, and we continue to work with parents to also adopt a positive and encouraging attitude to Maths. By getting involved in their children’s homework and exposing the children to how they use Maths is their everyday lives, the children develop a real love, interest and passion for Maths.
