KAPLA Workshop: A Hands-On STEM Experience
Our community, comprising students, staff, parents, carers, and governors, was thrilled to participate in an engaging KAPLA STEM workshop. This hands-on learning opportunity, featuring KAPLA’s giant construction integrating Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, was delivered by Jennifer from https://kaplaclubs.co.uk/
A Special Thanks
This unique workshop was made possible because of our head teacher, Mr. Kerbel, whose 500-miles fundraising campaign, along with generous donations, brought this event to life. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed and helped spread the word through their organisations and social media platforms. A special thanks goes to Harrow Online, whose portal significantly aided our fundraising efforts. Thank you Ms Naidoo- our Science Lead and Ms. Hernon- our Art & DT Lead for organising the workshop. Thank you to all the volunteers who came to help during the workshop.
A Multidimensional Learning Experience
The KAPLA workshop spanned two and a half days, focusing on a variety of learning areas, including Science, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, PSHE, perseverance and resilience, concentration, and creativity. The sessions were enriched with mathematical concepts such as shapes, directions, and positions and participants even learned a few French words!
Each class used the unique patented wooden KAPLA pieces to construct different structures, including bridges, houses, caterpillar, snake, castle, giraffe, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In the end, these individual creations contributed to a massive, extraordinary display for students and parents to admire.
The Grand Finale
The workshop concluded with a gallery walk by the whole school and then Parents and Carers joining in for a public viewing. The final step was an exciting finale: the demolition of the whole construction and tidying up. By strategically pulling out a few KAPLA pieces from the centre, the structures collapsed in a visually spectacular and scientifically intriguing manner. This activity was both fun and educational, highlighting principles of balance and structure.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and we owe a huge thanks to Jennifer for facilitating such an inclusive and engaging learning environment where every student could actively participate.
